The title of this post is the response I got from my friend Ashlee, after I told her that the tour I will start tomorrow will involve visiting three countries in 13 days and sleeping in a different hotel every night.
That IS an adventure, and this is the place to follow along with 19 intrepid travelers who are all somehow connected to St. Alban's Episcopal Church, as we take an "Anglican Heritage Tour" to the United Kingdom and Ireland.
This trip came about because, two years ago, a company called Faith Journeys approached my spouse, David, and asked him if he would be interested in leading it. He led a couple of similar tours to the Holy Land when he was a Baptist minister, and it seemed like a fun thing to do before he retires at the end of July.
It took a while to get all the plans in order, so we will begin the tour as we observe the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, which ultimately led to the creation of our particular brand of Christianity. That reformation began on October 31, 1517, when the German theologian Martin Luther published his 95 Theses. His work:
"...challenged the teachings of the Catholic Church on the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences. It sparked a theological debate that fueled the Reformation and subsequently resulted in the birth of Protestantism and the Lutheran, Reformed, and Anabaptist traditions within Christianity."
The Anglican and Episcopal Churches (and every other church outside the Roman Catholic and Orthodox folds, for that matter) are outcomes of Luther's attempt to call the Catholic Church to account.
During the course of the tour, we will visit many of the sites that are significant to our Anglican heritage, including Canterbury Cathedral and the original St. Alban's Church. We will worship while we see the sights and learn about our past, and I hope we will all return with a deeper sense of where we come from and how our faith has made—and will continue to make—a major difference in the world.
Let the adventure begin!
